My Story
Being relatively new to surfing, (learning in my early twenties) it's not been too long since I was a beginner myself. At the time, I struggled. I was training a lot: running, cycling, swimming and weightlifting; yet I could not get my front foot forward on my pop-up. Why?
Mobility. I had trained strength and endurance for so long in a linear fashion (squats, deadlifts, running and cycling) and had completely neglected the flexibility and ranges of motion needed for functional movement. This also meant that even when I managed to stand up I was ridged and locked up, unable to flow on the wave. Unsurprisingly, this coincided with suffering from chronic lower back pain, supposedly the prime years of my life.
I mainly struggled with the flexibility surrounding my hips, but after some time working on this through hours of stretching, I realised this wasn't enough. What I needed wasn't just to stretch my tight muscles, but to also strengthen them through those ranges of motion. The things that became important to me transferred into improving my surfing: fixing muscle imbalances, moving laterally, internal and external rotation at the hip, and being comfortable in low body positions. I was able to improve my surfing whilst unlocking my body and developing the ability to move more freely.
It turns out I wasn't the only one. This started to resonate with others, and through my four years of surf instructing, a common denominator holding surfers back, was their lack of mobility. If you've come to this site you may have had an injury yourself, or have a particular area of tightness; you may just want to move better and shake off the daily stressors of life on your body; you might be looking for that additional mobility training to your usual activities; or you're craving that extra boost to help improve your surfing.
Using my Sport and Exercise Science degree and Strength and Conditioning knowledge, I have tailored surf specific programmes that you can do any where, any time. The beauty of these programmes is that they require minimal equipment and help you to become the master of your own bodyweight - just like when you surf.
